Meteorology

METAR Decoder

Reading a METAR quickly and correctly is examined in the Meteorology paper, and it is the first thing a pilot checks before every flight.

Try an example

StationVABB
WindFrom 250° true at 18 kt, gusting 28 kt
Visibility2500 m
Ceiling8,000 ft
WeatherHeavy thunderstorm with rain
Temp / dew point26 / 25 °C
Humidity94%
QNH1002 hPa

Temperature and dew point are within 1 °C: the air is nearly saturated, so expect low cloud, mist or fog.

How to use it

  1. Paste a METAR, or start with one of the examples.
  2. The summary shows wind, visibility, ceiling, temperature, humidity and QNH at a glance.
  3. Below it, every group in the report is explained one by one, including trend groups.
